Description

When Chris MacDonald returned to his small middle-class hometown in Chapmansville, North Carolina after a difficult-turned-tragic schoolyear teaching in impoverished Appalachia, he was certain he never wanted to even go near the mountains again.  Never mind that he would be forsaking his own heritage and his lifelong dream to work with the people living there by doing so.  All that had mattered to him was recovering his happiness in life and he found that in taking a teaching job at the same school that he had attended as a child.

When he begins his fifth year of teaching at Chapmansville Elementary School, however, the happiness he has regained is suddenly shattered.  Not only is Calie Coburn, his newest student, from an area similar to the one he had once fled, but she is also part of the infamous mountain family that his family had once feuded with.

Chris plans to get only as involved with the Coburn family as he must, but repeatedly finds himself forced to do otherwise. The ensuing friendship that he then builds with the Coburn family is also hardly without difficulties as they deal with misunderstandings between them, opposition to their relationship by family and friends on both sides, and the haunting memories from his past that their presence in his life bring back. This culminates when he suddenly finds himself in the same situation that had ended in disaster and necessitated his leaving the mountains years before.

In spite of everything, Chris relies on his perseverence and faith to lead him, and in doing so, comes to reap rewards that he had never expected.
